How do they work ? I can see how it may put more sq. inches in contact with a smooth icy surface. But how does hiding the tread help in fresh snow ?

I've had snow tires literally freeze to the ground and it takes quite of bit of gas to free my vehicle. I would imagine that wouldn't be very good for fabric material...
