I don't understand this. The CPI for 2008 was -1.3. Its the first time in decades that many programs had no cost of living increases because the cost of living didn't go up. Rents are coming down. Why charge the kids in a hostel more ? The new CPI is coming out on the 18th. I wonder if anybody does a local CPI. I do realize that a national CPI may not be accurate in a piney little hamlet off the beaten path. Discuss.

Here's a breakdown of the rate changes at the Davison Hostel. Note this season was the first season in three years they changed the rates. These prices include the 13% transient occupancy tax. Most rates were raised, other rates were lowered or stayed the same. I'm guessing it doesn't have to do so much with CPI, but supply and demand...

Tips:
DO NOT Sleep in your vehicle because
1. You will freeze to death.
2. You will die due to carbon monoxide poisoning since your intelligence will lead you to believe that leaving the engine on and sleeping with the heater on will keep you warm. Mammoth dumps and dumps she will. This is what snowman's alluding to.
3. You will get ticketed or towed for parking on the side of the road. You will get towed on private property. There are places to park “safely’ but I won’t tell you Albeit, you did say "near" mammoth so camping on BLM land is possible

Poor kid (no pun intended, lol)

Gee Bombtripper , you are SO kind and helpful and certain that this person does not even approach your level of intelligence.

I sleep in an unheated camper. The coldest morning was -11. I am still alive and kicking but don't listen to me since I am just a poor dork.

There's some drinking but nothing crazy. I once bartered a beer from a guy in exchange for frozen burritos. There's a lot of folks from other countries that stay there. One guy had a 420 habit, but he smoked outside... Overall I'm happy going there and will in the future...

On a side note, it is impossible to freeze to death in your sleep... the cold will wake you up.

Come to Whiskey Creek right after the lifts close for happy hour. If you order anything off their bar menu before 6:00 p.m., it's half price. Lots of drink specials, too. Always crowded...you'll meet and make LOTS of friends there, including forum folks! :D
Always carry chains.

If it's really cold using two bags, one inside the other works great.
I put the warmer of the two on the inside.
Don't forget a dry pair of wool socks and a knit hat.
And if you have the means to boil water fill a Nalgene with hot water and take it to bed with you.
G'night.

Two bags in one. That's a good idea. I have one of the big Coleman flannel lined canvas rectangle one. Put a regular bag in one of those. Got it from Sports Authority for around 70 bucks I think.

I car camp all the time and have never had any issues. Also be aware that its really not the nights that you worry about as long as you have a good sleeping bag, it is the MORNINGS when temps are the coldest. It is always really tough to get up and get all your gear on when you can't get warm. Just be aware of this. One alternative that I have done on the colder night (sub zero) are stay at the Mammoth Mountain RV Park where you have heated bathrooms and free hot showers. Its 19 bucks a night and there is nothing to warm you up in the morning like a nice boiling hot shower. Now I just bum off my buddies there, but for the first month or two you will have the best time car camping. Have fun and good luck!

That's exactly what I do too. I have a down bag and that and even my Thermarest goes inside the big flannel lined Coleman. If you place your damp socks in between the two layers of bags you will find that they will be nice and dry in the morning. Don't wear damp base layers to bed. Keep dedicated sleeping items just for sleeping in.

There are plenty of condo developments where you could at least sleep in the underground parking. Check out the village.
