Thanks, shubwa, for posting those pictures from the "good old days". I'm part of the alumni and lived in Mammoth from 1978 until 1987. My name is Chris Peterson. I worked for a year as an instructor at June Mt. with the Shorts and Bruce Cosbey before coming up to Ski School at the Main Lodge a year later. I have many fond memories of skiing with you in the winters and working in construction with you in the summers. I think you might have even worked with my ex and Tim Dawson at Roget's for a bit.

I have a few cool old snapshots stashed in an old photo album somewhere that I may digitize and post at some future date. The first thing that caught my eye was the old Ray-Ban sunglasses in the picture. My son recently pulled my old pair of those out of storage at my ex-wife's house with a couple of old season passes.

I agree the some of the best stuff was off top before Chair 23. Dropping into the Drop-outs and Wipe-outs over the cornice was knarly. On one powder day I was skiing in uniform during the morning private lesson hour. I was tucking down from the Gondola to make it up the hump on the other side of Cornice Bowl when there were huge wind drifts across the ridge run. The light was flat and they were very difficult to see. I caught some air over one wing drift and stuffed it face first into the next huge wind drift, coming to a complete stop and burying myself into the snow. I was so embarrassed being part of a big yard sale in uniform.

I remember that Chris; long time man. Bruce was very well liked and came with a wealth of knowledge. I don't recall if we had a nickname for him, but I do remember the more colorful ones. His brother Craig, also an instructor, was famous for his close calls with the other guys as we skied in formation, which was common in the Max Good "Swiss Army" era. We called him "Kama-Cosbey". ;)

Lynette said she just photographed these old snapshots with her digital camera, so she could convert them. I'm hoping you'll do the same. I use Photobucket as they have a pretty cool edit feature.

I don't know how much they shaved off the top to make room for the top of 23, but the top few hundred verts were way steep and often guarded by cornices. You didn't see the wind-scalloped oyster shell bumps you see up there today.

Hi,
I also worked as an ski Instructor (and night crew) at warming hut 2 from 78-83. I foundly remember making the short hike up Lincoln mountain and skiing that good wind pack in the avi chutes. Gary Paolino and I used to shoot movies (8MM-before cam corders) on many a powder day on Lincoln. I wonder if he still has those movies somewhere. Here is a shot of the Hut 2 instructors circa 82/83. I'm standing in the middle, to the right of Steve "Hi, how are you?" Erlanger.

Wow, I can just barely remember those blue wedge outfits when I was a little kid. Strange to think some of you guys might have actually taught me how to ski haha.

Is that a t-bar where 16 is now?

That is a poma or platter lift. You can see the chair above and to the right a little in that photo.

Besides Erlanger, I recognize quite a few faces, even though I didn't work at that lodge and it's been twenty-five years. :o:

Here goes: Jim (Buddy) Conrad, Jess Schwartzkoff, Gary (Popo) Posikian, Stevey Copeland, Jack Edgehill, Donna Trumble (Etchyson) who now lives in Bend, Mark Michelon and Gary Paolino and Max Good on the far right.

Hey Phil, sure I remember you from back in the day. Thanks for posting up.

Your post inspired me to get back and try to post a couple of old pictures. The first is me and a couple of instructor/ski friends from the Main Lodge, Craig and Maureen Walsh. He was a local realtor and she served cocktails at the Cask & Cleaver, besides being instructors. Sorry to say, I've lost contact with them, but have many fond memories.

The second picture is chillin' at the Shepard's Tub, with Mt. Morrison in the background. One of those folks is Rick Burns, also an instructor from Burlington, Vermont. All of us in the tub had just returned from a spring ski touring trip from Mammoth to Yosemite Valley. Talk about memories, I remember heli skiing one spring down Old Man's Bowl, in front of Mt. Morrison, all the way down to Convict Lake. Awesome descent! I believe it was Ed Hurley, a race department and Roget's alumni, leading the charge.
