Mammoth had them in some "corner" of their old WEB site. (That's where I got the old B&W one from) I snagged all the ones they had. I'll try and post them soon.

Wow. When you start looking at the technology and equipment "back in the day" it's a wonder anyone learned to ski. Would be interesting to know if the sport is safer today or not. It's hard to say. We have better equipment, but more people on the slopes running into each other. One things for sure, we're definitely more pampered now with hi-speed lifts, groomed runs, services all over the mountain, etc.

The old photos are great -- keep em coming.

i would say the skis of today would be more safer due to shape, contour, weight, the tail, bindings, etc. Unless this ski is your cup of tea :P

the 05/06 epic season. trying to make it up june on new years day. it was just puking snow down to the 3,000ft level. took us like 15 hours to get to bishop. continued on north, and just made it past the checkpoint before the shut down the 395 all together. we tried making it over deadman summit into june, but the plows stopped blowing and made a u-turn just near the cal-trans yard. so we turned around, headed back into mammoth. the new years crowd that tried to leave was now stuck in town, no one in, no one out. ended up sleeping in the emergnecy shelter in the mall. haha talk about fun times. mammoth got 95" in 30 hours. this is the vons parking lot...those are SUV's <br>

Lot's of memory fragments . . . I'll try to recount a few:

I first skiied Mammoth in 1962 (I think, but it could have been '63.) I was 16 (or 17) then, so you know I'm both a longtimer and an old timer  For the next few years, I managed 3 or 4 trips/year.

Anyway, there were 3 double chairs and 2 T-bars then. The ramp on Chair 1 was in play and I remember lots of toil sidestepping up it . . . and many domino wipe-outs - "Geez Dude, you gotta use your edges . . " The T-bars were both gnarly nearing the top - a few embarassing moments there too. BTW - Stump Alley actually had stumps then.

There was just Main Lodge , and a hot dog stand you could ski up to that was located near where mid chalet (aka McCoy Station) is now. Dave and Roma were on the mountain most days.

We were pretty hardcore in those days. We'd leave LA at 3 or so on Friday, and get there by 10 or 11 most of the time. We stayed at the Arlberg Chalet (now the Mexican/Italian place with the bridge, across and up Main Street from Angels.) The Arlberg had regular rooms and a bar, and it had a dorm with 12 or so beds and 2 bathrooms - that's where we stayed. I think it was $10 or $12 per night - though we didn't get much sleep.

The bar at the Arlberg was jumping on the weekends and our fake IDs allowed us to join in - dancing to Beatles songs, etc. all night.

Myself and my buds were all about the skiing though, first on the mountain and nearly last off. We had the cool (?) long thong bindings (Marker turntable, Nevada toe) and rather than take them off we would ski up to the aforementioned hot dog stand - grab a bite while sitting at a picnic table - then off again. We were so wiped out by Sunday afternoon, that we had to take (borrowed) diet pills to make it home to LA |-)

I'm sure I'll think of tons more to add . . . . like the winter of '69 - anyone remember that?

Good night for now . . . still can't wait for that first trip of the year!
