According to skilifts.org Chair 18 was built in 1979 and taken down in 1997

and yes good call on the Magnum PI reference 2NA...either that or a Pat Sajak or Chuck Woolery with dark hair

Skilifts.org is a great idea, but I have never been able to get much information such as that out of it.

I know 18 was not there when I started skiing Mammoth (70-71), and was still there sometime into the 90's. I suspect it would have interfered with the new Chair 2 alignment, and I always thought that the top terminal was at risk from avalanche.

The old chair 10, old chair 2, and chair 18 were all replaced by the new chair 2 and Goldrush if I remember correctly. Still miss chair 19 though, especially when 1 has a line. And I really miss the entertainment value of old T-Bar 1.

i have fond memories of T-Bar 2 but i never rode T-Bar 1 because i was terrified at my young age to ride T-Bar 1....and i agree, i think every mountain needs a T-Bar....they are fun...

T-Bar 1 was fine as long as you got on with someone relatively the same height - otherwise the steep part could get really interesting. I hated riding up with my husband who is a foot taller. The problem with T-bars is letting them go - some people would do it too close to where someone was riding down - always afraid that someone would get hit by the releasing bar. Lot of folks crashed on T-bar 1 though.

On really windy days the tee bars were the only thing that could run.

The top lift shack of T-1 was on a tower, we called it the space needle.

It would sway in the wind and made me feel sea sick!

Tbar-1 was also a quick way up the mountain to the top of the race course ... if you dared risk it.

I had a guy slip and fall on the steep section. Happened a few hooks in front of me. He slid all the say down, with people lifting their skis to let him by. His eyes were like fried eggs. lol

That's why it was so entertaining! It was a regular occurance ;) I was entertainment a few times too - but never fell - I was too afraid to fall :) and always managed to sidestep the carnage.

^I’m not sure what amazes me more, the evac training or that sweet outfit.^ HA-ha

Nice to see your stoke back on the board CJK, it has been pretty ugly around these parts lately.

With all the avalanche activity of late I decided to post an old story on my blog about doing control work on the mountain in the late '80's. Though some folks here might enjoy it...
