Man still missing in DV

A 67-year-old San Francisco man, George Kohler, is still missing in Death Valley. He was last seen since Monday, March 12, by a group of bicyclists that he was camping with.

When Kohler did not show up the next morning, Inyo County Search and Rescue was notified that he was missing and a search was started.

RIP - it didn't sound to me like they would find him alive - being tired is a symptom of physical stress and possible heart failure. And, even in winter, lots of fluids are needed in the desert and he had been missing too long. condolences to his friends and family.

They sure didn't give much information about the poor guy. I wonder if he decided to take a night walk and died out there for some reason without making it back to his tent. He was 67 but looked in good shape.

Well, if one is going to give up the ghost, I guess Death Valley is the place to do it.

The thing about Death Valley, as we all know, is that real strange things have been known to happen out there. So until they say the gent had a heart attack, I'm skeptical.

I suspect it will be natural causes - whatever they were. dehydration can be deadly too. Lost one of my employees and a co-worker last year who both were only 53 and in great shape as well - one heart disease and one an anuersym right after he completed a triatholon. Too me, by saying he was tired, he indicated that he wasn't feeling well since he wandered off and then was reported missing. It is very sad but at least the family has closure now instead of not knowing.

That brings another question to mind. If he was so tired, why would he walk away from the tent like that? This is where things start to get dicey in an old Death Valley Days way. Dang that valley of Death! So many have given it up down there and were never found. They have become ghosts of the desert.

Thanks Stuie and enjoy that SHM. They are pretty cool to include us in their mag on a frequent basis. Mammoth has advertisements in there and it is nice.

Nevada Magazine used to be like that years ago and is now nothing but advertisements. At least SHM has a mix of both and a separate real estate section that is just too much. Those Tahoe pads are righteous!

I don't either, John, and it is really a mystery without more facts. It is just another one of those Death Valley stories one never knows what to believe. Death Valley Scotty capitalized on telling those mystery stories in a big way and made it a national phenomenon with his train rides across the country.

I wonder what old Scotty would have to say about this one? Was it a natural death, suicide, alien abduction and release, exposure or murder?

What's so mysterious about this? He sounds like he may have been having some sort of physical/medical distress already and that caused disorientation so he wandered off so he was out of reach when things went bad for his body. I know people who have been disoriented from hypothermia.

Yeah, I bet if someone had checked his charts 240 hrs. out they could have predicted this.

Wha makes you think you have any facts, let alone basis for wild conjecture? The Coroner's report isn't out yet; the people who do know anything can't talk, both for legal reasons as well as decency toward the man's survivors. The newspaper has presented the outline of the facts accurately enough; let the man be laid to rest and his relatives get some peace before you try yet more self aggrandizement at his expense.

The answers, as they usually are, are both simple and sad.

That happy Canadian Moderator would be doing a good thing if he would close this thread down.
