The Lakers gave it there all in Minny on and off the Ice. Grand times had by all. God bless the MidWest. Quality people.

Nice job Lakers. I bet you guys had a great time. What an awesome experience. I don't know how many of you are from the midwest or back east but hockey really is a different beast back there.

I was on a Pee Wee team from Culver City, CA that was the first California team to make it to the Nationals in 1973. It was held in Superior Wisconsin. We were a great team but got completely schooled by all teams we faced. It really showed us what high level hockey was all about. We had 1 practice a week and played a game or 2. Those teams were on the ice most likely every day of the week. We also had a blast but got blown out pretty bad.

I hope to get up there and skate sometime on the lakes.

Rotten, we had two players from Philly, one from Boston, one from Duluth, one from Minneapolis, and the last, but not least, is from orange county. We're going back next year and will win at least one game.

Snowave,

It's a great movie but unless you played the game you wouldn't understand.

A little unfair to say I wouldn't understand unless I played the game. There's alot of movies/documentaries out there that people don't experience what the story being told is about... but that doesn't mean they don't get it or can't understand/relate in other ways.

Anyway, I get the concept, not questioning that... I just think it could have been written/directed/produced a little better is more what I'm saying.

What do you expect? It's done by a bunch of hockey players. The whole movie is about losing the game to a bunch of robots conditioned to play and go pro. You see it in every sport. Parents pushing their kids non stop to play, play, play. They yell at their kids, send them to training camps, force them to play at any cost. I coach the local youth and you would be surprised what comes out of their little mouths. It really is a shame.

I thought you thought the movie sucked. I thought I was great and a real tribute to the way hockey should be played, outdoors, in the freezing cold, and on black ice. Playing n a lake gives you a sense of freedom that you dont get on the rink. The rink makes me play a totally different style. It's way to constricted and structured. The lakes is all about having fun.

I just a great new movie for you check out. Next time you are in town we will have a private screening at the bar. Will follow that up with pond hockey and you will see the enthusiasm from all the local hockey heads. After that we can watch snapshot and fight.

No, me and the lady both liked it... just didn't love it. I agree with your analysis completely. The concept was fine and good, and had no fault with that. I also think it was a good tribute to the aspect of the game. I think it was more the interviews, and sometimes lack of depth of the narratives with alot of people, including the NHL pros. We just thought it could have been better. Of course, the somewhat poor picture quality and the audio/video being off the second half of the movie didn't help... maybe I should return it to Amazon and try another copy.

anyway, we'll be up there in a few hours.. maybe we'll stop by for a few cold ones this week. I'm always up for Slapshot.. I have 2 DVD copies and a VHS copy. :D

didn't make it by Grumpy's this week... too hard to get off the mtn around lunch time with such fun conditions.

Next time I'm up, maybe you'll be working in the evening... or we'll try to get a skate in on Wed afternoon, if stick time is still then.

p.s. snowmob... I owe you some beers and dinner. I will let you know next time we're up so we can pay up. :)

From today's TOML News:

The Mammoth Ice Rink is scheduled to stay open thru February 26. Drop by for $5.00 Monday’s (6:30-9:30 p.m.), “Stick time” every Wednesday lunch-time, and group lessons are scheduled every Wednesday afternoon. Call (760) 934-2505 for all the details.

And a bit more on why in the Mammoth Times:

Ice Rink to close Feb. 26

The Mammoth Ice Rink, coming off its most successful year ever, will close Feb. 26.
The problem is not for lack of skaters, but, rather, the sun.
“When we hit March,” said John Connolly of the recreation department, “the sun gets too high and it turns the rink to mush.”
The Feb. 26 date is not written in stone.
Should Mammoth get a cold snap, with cloudy days, the rink could stay open, said Stuart Brown, director of the department.
Given weather forecasts, though, that prospect is getting more remote by the day.

What time do you all start? I'd enjoy coming up with my camp chair and camera to watch. That's Twin, right?
