Photos

Postby teledork » Wed Oct 19, 2011 11:44 am

Photobucket tells me the photo is less than 700 pixels (640 I believe) but the Mammoth forum gives me the red warning notice. I shrink the photo yet again (down to 300 something) and I still get the warning. On a rare occasion the photo is accepted but more often than not I cannot post a photo at all. On one occasion the photo had already been posted but when I went back to edit the text I got the warning notice. I hit the submit button anyway and it went through. At first this particular photo was oddly cropped but later was not.

Who is telling the truth? Is photobucket lying to me about the size of my photo or is the Mammoth forum housing some kind of bug?

I think its a bug because I've gotten that on occasion. I have to refresh and reload sometimes to clear it out then everything goes fine. Its definitely a forum glitch because I use tinypic instead of PB.

^^I have tried just that - to reload - and still get the "glitch". Sometimes I try again later and it works but sometimes it does not. I just give up after a couple of attempts.

I gave up. Is it possible to be a browser issue? Please excuse if this is a foolish thought. I am no geek.

I've run into that irritation too.

PB doesn't have a 700 pixel setting, so if you want maximum size, you have to allow it to upload at a greater size, then reduce it to 700 pixels. The trouble is, if you do, MMF still tells you it is too large. If you then reduce it to 640, it STILL indicates that it is too large. Sometimes refreshing the cache works, sometimes not. Sometimes, the photo is presented, even when it tells you it won't be.

Solution: Upload at 640 pixels and leave it at that. If you've already uploaded it at a bigger size, just delete that one and re-upload the same pix to photobucket at the 640 bit size.

Can anyone tell me if the 700 pixel limit is common in forums? If so, I could suggest PB have a 700 pixel option.

I change the size on PB to the 640 setting.I replace the original on PB. I have had the experience of the photo posting even after the warning but it may be cropped funny. At other times the post will not go through. This tends to happen when I am trying to post multiple resized photos which makes it all the more infuriating as I am not going to continue to try and try and try again in order to try and satisfy the passive-aggressive tendencies of this forum.

Yea, but even when you ask it to reset the size and replace the original, it doesn't do that. Well ... at least the MMF doesn't recognize that it's done that. Just delete the photo and start over ... uploading the same photo at the 640 setting.

I agree it's pretty effing frustrating. :headbang:

I think I deleted and tried to repost the 640 photos, several of them, as many as six times the other day. I reset the cache on my computer and the wireless router. I threatened several inanimate objects and organizations with the power of my mind (it has worked with my printer for several years) The only thing I did not do was hit the submit button in spite of the BIG RED WARNING

I am going to be curious to see if anyone who actually gets paid by MM responds to this thread.

If you think the formatting of your post is messing it up, then find a thread with a photo, hit Quote, and place your URL in secret spots within the quoted post.

More likely, your photo host is the problem. Try tinypic.com

TD. You have to resize it to 700 wide or less BEFORE you upload it to your host. Resizing at the host site seems to be the glitch.

To be honest I normally resize photos in my Photoshop. Thinking along the lines of what PHo just wrote, maybe you can resize your photos thru Photobucket then drag them onto your desktop. Then, try batch uploading them to Photobucket again (the resized ones). Its a pain but try that next time.

I have never seen 700 pixels as a standard anywhere. Its usually 640, 800 or 1000. What I have seen on vBulletin is a nifty feature that the Admins can set that will auto size any photo and you then have the option of clicking it for the full size in another window.

This forum is just a pile of crap when it comes to posting photos. I've had the same problem as everyone else trying to resize photos. After about 40 minutes of trying I'm ready to smash my screen! BS WITH PHOTOS!

I can't comment on the issue you're all talking about above...as I've never had that error.

..... but I do know that In PB, instead of resizing every photo, just set your default upload size to "large"
- 640 x 480 (as BIker mentioned), and it will do it all for you every time, automatically.

Also, for that use Iphoto and photobucket, there is an app you can download that makes exporting even easier.

Sure, the whole photo posting limitations on this forum suck, but it's easier than it's ever been to post photos here as far as I'm concerned.
