Price for half-day group lessons next winter?

Postby jimqpublic » Thu May 05, 2011 10:48 am

I'm curious about the price on June ski lessons during the high season. Trying to decide whether to call and beg to add more Mammoth$ to our MVP12.

I was thinking mosly half-day group lessons for the kids.

Thanks,
Jim

I work in Tahoe now, but it is not unusual for most Mountain business models to include a price increase of somewhere around 5% every year. One reason, I think I heard it called Rusty economics 101, is that if they sell out of something, the prices are not high enough. I was never a business major so I am not sure what that means. But if you were to lower your costs every year by 5% and your income went up 5% every year, well that is kind of how many resorts run their businesses. They never show a profit cause the executives take them as bonuses.( so when they show a profit at all remember they have all taken a sizable bonus) Make sense? Time to operate a ski resort co-op?

Anyway I am sure someone knows what the group lesson costs were, but at any rate I think they are like a gift that keeps on giving.

In my business, I have to deliver 4 hours of work to be able to bill for a half day. Over the years prices have gone up and the amount of instruction time has gone down. Kinda like the weight in a bag of chips. Or the size of a candy bar. Didn't half days use to be 3 hours ? Anybody know this info going back 20, 30, 40 years ???

There does seem to be a trend in ski schools to move toward the 2 hour lesson. I personally don't like it, but hey on another note, a Main Lodge Instructor told me (I am not sure this is true) He has his clients book him for half day through June Mt. and then meet him at Mammoth. They pay less than they would if they booked at Mammoth by booking through June M. I don't think this would work with group lessons though.

OK we need to clear this up.

You can only book a June Mountain Instructor through June Mountain, not a Main Lodge, Canyon or Little Eagle Instructor.

If it is that instructor's day off, or if the booking is for an all-day lesson, then it is possible to have a June Mountain Private Lesson conducted at Mammoth Mountain: and yes, you will pay June Mountain prices which are lower than Mammoth Mountain prices.

Conversely, you can book a Mammoth Mountain Instructor to meet you at June Mountain for a private lesson as well You will then pay Mammoth Mountain prices.

Seems obvious to me that group lessons cannot be relocated.

I don't think this is quite clear. Of course you can not relocate a group lesson, that is a given. But if you are a June Mt Instructor you can have someone book you for a private request (not limited). Then you can make special arrangments with them to meet you at Mammoth. If this is true, why don't more people book a private through June and have their instructors meet them at Mammoth; or, why don't June and Mammoth sync up their prices consistently?
