I know patrollers and mountaineerers who wrap several feel of duct tape around their poles, about a fist's width down from the grip. Not only do you have a nice stash of tape, the space between the normal grip and the tape provides a "false grip" for traversing the steeps.
Duct tape IS useful. I reeled off a few inches when a buddy ripped his glove one day and we kept riding. Friends of mine literally taped a guy's boot toe to his ski when he blew a binding in the back country. Held long enough to get everyone out.
Not sure where boarders stash their duct tape...
