Smith Variant Helmet...

Postby pkerr » Fri Nov 19, 2010 7:19 am

Anyone have it? Opinion? With or without the brim? Does the brim version cause any problems with goggles?
Thanks

I have the new Smith Vantage (very similar to the Variant) and the fit is great. I have a brand new one that I'm selling in the barter bin if you're interested.

I've worn R.E.D. helmets the last few seasons, but this Smith helmet feels like it has a better design. I've yet to get it out on the hill (hopefully this weekend), but it definitely is comfy enough to wear around the house...yes, I'm that guy.

You can never be too careful - drywall hurts.

Well, they say that somewhere between 30-45% of heat is lost through the head. So yes, drywall safety and head warmth...this helmet is PERFECT...oh yeah, I bet it does pretty good on the mountain as well.

For the record, I have Oakley Crowbars (yes I wear them around the house as well) and they seem to fit quite well with the brim.

Oh the Crowbars huh. That's what I have now. Then I should be set just getting the helmet. (1/2 price through PSIA)
Thanks!

Killer! You'll love the helmet. I have the Skull Candy Bluetooth setup and it's just ridiculous. Wireless music and cell phone calls.

I just got one. Haven't even skied with it yet, but it seems to fit well with my Crowbars.

The brim keeps snow from accumulating on your goggles. It's fantastic!

I have been using the variant w/brim since it was released paired with the Smith I/O Goggles. Compatibility between the two is perfect, complete visibility without obstruction is most important. The I/O's offer just that. I just ordered another variant but I got it without the brim. The brim does offer protection from branches and things while skiing the trees which is nice, it also helps on those plentiful sunny california days...But I find it obtrusive to my vision while in a low stance looking up, especially while tucking. So it depends on on skiing preference visibility or a touch of added protection. Since I have both i have options now, but I say no brim. Oh also it is really not easy to put your goggles up on the helmet. And if you do, at least for me it stretched the bottom edge of the goggle strap more than the top a little annoying. I hope that helps.
