No pkerr, what you did with Eric was safe. He wouldn't have taken you out there is it wasn't safe. It hadn't snowed that much and if you check the avalanche centers web page for that day you will see that danger was "low". You weren't anywhere with a pitch over 35 degrees anyway. That's side country anyways, it not really back country, people are there on a daily basis after a little snowfall.
I was ducking the ropes and riding back to the cabin on many days like you had that day.

Don't listen to a couple unqualified opinions on the internet when you literally had an expert with you who deemed it safe. I'm glad you shared this TR, and I'm impressed with the personal touch of Ski Patrol to take care of you back there!

edit: Please don't prove anything for my sake. Especially since your "snowcave" question indicates that one of us has been out there and the other hasn't.
They were safe out there that day....and anybody preaching something different is just being a hater.
Have fun this weekend in the "dry slidy" stuff! I know I will!
Thanks for the stoke Pkerr!

Plus, it didn't hurt the odds that pkerr is a ski instructor at his local ski resort, Hidden Valley, near St. Louis, MO.![]()

What does being a ski instructor have to do with proper BC protocol? Being PSIA certified does not help you not die in the BC or side country. A lot of the spew in this thread is exactly what gets people into trouble, "oh there was an expert on hand," "oh that slope never slides" etc. The kind of stuff that makes people justify being in a place they shouldn't have been without the proper equipment and knowledge. It's awesome that Eric took you out there and you had a good time, but it still is irresponsible to lead a group of visitors out of bounds without the proper equipment.

It's laughable how many of these people who trust ski patrollers to keep the in-bounds terrain safe for them would second guess that same patrollers judgement on a low danger avi day in low danger terrain just outside the ropes.
