Huge storm brewing off Japan

Postby SurfnSnowboard » Tue Jan 15, 2013 12:41 am

There's a big storm developing off of Japan that looks like it will become VERY powerful and could create significant wave heights of 63 feet.

A dangerous winter storm is developing rapidly over the western North Pacific east of Japan, one that has the potential to be even more powerful than Hurricane Sandy.

During the next 24-48 hours this storm will deepen to 938 mb with winds Force 10 or more (55-80 knots) and significant wave heights building as high as 19 meters (63 feet) within 420 NM south and southeast of the center.

Sandy, by comparison, reached a minimum low pressure of 940 millibars.

This is a very dangerous storm and all shipping should stay well clear of it’s path.

Looks pretty ominous.

Definitely worth watching to track, and keep a close watch of to see if it even intensifies .. and by how much.

Will that storm make it to North America on the jet?

Yep right between HI and CA. One model showed it breaking up and splitting up to the Aleutians as well. Jet forecasts shows it going south way south then ?. Shows it skirting right next to HI..

The storm bottomed out at a min pressure of 932 mb which is lower than forecast with significant wave height of 68 feet and some waves of over 100 feet. North Shore should be picking up on Thursday and continue big through the weekend. Surfline is showing 25 to 30 feet for the North Shore with occasional sets to 35 feet and even bigger on Sunday.

SoCal surf should pick up a little over the weekend and into Monday from the storm but nothing major based on the Surfline forecast.

In the press release announcing the Mavericks contest they said the waves would be "insane" yet other forecasters are only calling for surf that is 15 to 20 feet. Big, even huge, by most standards but not Mavericks.

Surfline's Kevin Wallis explains: "A broad and exceptionally intense low developed in the western North Pacific over the past couple days with hurricane force wind (50-65 knots+) and satellite recorded seas of 45 feet. As a result, a very long period northwest swell will move into Northern California over the weekend and be strongest on Sunday. Because the storm that set up this swell was so far away -- roughly 3000 miles from California when it was at its strongest -- the swell will be lully and inconsistent at times. However, when the sets do show they will be fairly solid at Maverick's on Sunday. Conditions will also be excellent as the swell peaks with high pressure over the western US setting up sunny skies and light wind."
