September Stormsss!

Postby MountainNut » Tue Aug 07, 2012 4:37 pm

Well, I can be a little optimistic can't I?

Could happen. How about what happened at Silverton a few years back when they got a nice one come in one September day (and then went .. "skiing")? And remember Mammoth Mt a few years ago when a storm rolled in around Sept 2nd or 3rd?

Too bad Timberline won't likely be open much next month, just in case they get a few inches (4-6") on the Palmer snowfield run(s). Also, a shame that the guys from Beartooth (Pass) don't operate their little lift or rope tow on into September (right, it's the road-plowing thing)..

Too far out right now. Reservoirs are dropping so fast it doesn't matter much what happens any more. It would have to rain every afternoon for weeks to make up for what we have lost.

If it wasn't for the remaining patches of snow below the big peaks, all the outlet creeks would dry up. Many of them have dried up already.

I did feel that it was cooler in the shade with the window down this morning driving up the hill. Right up around 8,000 feet, so those patches of snow are going to hold.

It is out of sight!

The ground cover and Jeffery Pines are a month ahead of schedule, I even saw some Aspens getting yellow at the Snow Creek Golf Course.

That is why I said Early Fall on July 7th.

Cherry tomatoes started ripening a week or so ago down here, but I am late for Bishop.

Are you getting enough heat for that this past summer in June Lake?

Has the summer been average, hotter than normal, or cooler than normal?

Has it really been that cool, or is it just lack of moisture in the ground at root-level? (Eg, low snowfall year and lack of rain?)

It is not cool at all yet. It is due to the fact that there has been little to no moisture since before summer began. I reported that South Lake is dropping fast and could be down to the creek bed in a couple of months. We are at least a month or more ahead of the normal weather pattern. Today is late summer and tomorrow could be early fall.

Did notice the Manzanitas were quite yellow for this time of year at 7000 feet plus on the West side. Some were 50 percent bright yellow. Sure this is in part to stress caused by lack of water etc.. Don't remember them turning so early, then again my memory tricks me occasionally..

I realized whats needed is a dying typhoon coming over from the East Pacific. I think thats what caused those big Fall snows in the 2000s.

Wow. Is that what it was in October of 2004 (or was it 2005)?

Keep us posted, cheaps, if you see anything like this crossing the Pacific, headed our way with any residual strength..

Super Typhoon Sanba will threaten Okinawa, Japan late Saturday or early Sunday local time and will eventually push into South Korea by Monday.

Wow, don't we want to experience Fall this year? Come on kids, they aren't going to open the mountain in September or even early October.

There's still lots of fishing and fall colors to take pictures of. Relax, you will have your Mammoth Mountain soon enough.
