Got Wind?

Postby Dropn N » Wed Nov 30, 2011 12:03 pm

Starting to blow pretty good here in Costa Mesa. The flag on top of Hoag Hospital is telling me it is NOT offshore!

Wind? You want wind? There was a gust of 135mph at the top in the last hour and the sustained wind speed has averaged over 100mph for the last hour.

Impressive!

I don't think I've ever seen winds that high from the East before.

Wind chill is apparently off the chart.

Edit: Just noticed that there is a formula to calculate the wind chill, but I'm too lazy at this point. Anyone else who wants to calculate it is more than welcome.

"Winds need to be below 110mph to calculate windchill"

It really doesn't get that much colder than shown on the chart - at 8F with 109mph winds it's -28F windchill.

Great snow making wx!

From Reno:

WINDS ARE ON TRACK AND ARE QUITE GUSTY IN MOST AREAS. STRONG
NORTHEAST GRADIENT WILL PREVENT DECOUPLING WITH WINDS ONLY BACKING
OFF SLIGHTLY IF AT ALL. IN THE SIERRA, THEY ARE LIKELY TO
STRENGTHEN ESPECIALLY OVER RIDGES. ALREADY GETTING GUSTS TO 145
MPH OVER MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN AND NEAR 100 MPH ALONG THE CREST AROUND
TAHOE. NAM HAS H7 WINDS HITTING 100+ KTS AROUND 15Z ALONG THE
CREST. OUR NORMAL RULE OF THUMB HERE IS TO DOUBLE THE 700 MB
WINDS TO GET PEAK GUSTS OVER THE CREST. IF THIS IS TRUE, 200 MPH
GUSTS ARE POSSIBLE. WOW!

Strangely its calm here.

If winds are indeed at 130mph there surely has to be some lift damage ?

Not to mention what that wind is doing to the snow!

Mammoth won't need to open the ice rink in town; they already have one on the mountain!
