Long time lurker

Postby smooth turns » Fri Dec 07, 2012 11:00 pm

Hello to all,

I have been lurking this great forum for years, and I decided to create an ID because this is the year I am getting back to skiing after knee surgery a couple of years ago (jumping like a fool at Mountain High East). I have not skied Mammoth much in recent years (decades?) and expect to have some questions for the vets of this board. My screen name is smooth turns because that is how I want to ski from now on.

I grew up skiing Mammoth 20+ days a year in the 70s and 80s. My Dad starting skiing Mammoth in the late 40s, and before they built Warming Hut II we parked a motorhome right across from chair 8. My Dad was a hardcore ski nut and we visited nearly every ski hill in the western US. Of course, Mammoth was our favorite.

I also love the Mammoth area in summer, and have camped many times on the June Lake Loop. I am bummed about June Mountain closing because my family had a great trip there two years ago at Christmas and we were looking forward to returning this year.

Here is a picture my Dad took in the mid 50s.

Welcome smooth turns!

Great old photo...the more things change the more they stay the same. One can't park that close anymore unless they're a Black Pass holder! :D

Enjoy returning to Mammoth Mountain and Mammoth Lakes! I should be back out there when my knee heals from a total replacement nearly 8 weeks ago.

So many things you can't see anymore - The old Chair 1 side-step ramp, T-Bar 1, the trees in the middle of Broadway, the Main Lodge before the People Mover platform, and I think I once owned that bug in the lower left corner.

Yes, Dave McCoy the founder of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area has a fabulous website:

I can't believe the quality in the preservation of that old photo. It really looks like it was a recent snapshot, image-wise, but it has all the older 50s cars and trucks and doesn't look like the Broadway/Ch 1 scene of today at all.

Most older photos I've seen have the usual yellowing and fade that give the image's true age away..

Wow.

It may be a scan of the original negative or positive film that was stored correctly. The faded yellowish photos are usually a flatbed scan of an actual paper print that has faded over the years. Add a few scratches and some dust and it really looks old.
