Have skied past 3 years, but can't afford Mammoth

Postby Double B in SC » Wed Feb 11, 2009 10:02 pm

In my over 25 years of skiing, I have skied at over 40 ski areas in the US and feel that Mammoth is one of the best, but I can't afford to pay $83 for a lift ticket.

Unfortunetely, I have not skied at Mammoth for the past 3 seasons, because of the cost.

I know many of you may say that you can't compare Mammoth to the areas I list below, due to big differences is skiable acres, length of season, amount of grooming & lifts, higher altitude leading to more consistent snowpack, etc.

That is great. But if you can't afford $83 a day, you just don't ski.

Skiing is my passion. I think about it every day; I would rather ski at all; then not ski because I can't afford Mammoth.

Listed below are the lift ticket costs I have paid to ski other areas the past 3 seasons:

$30 @ Donner Ski Ranch; Lake Tahoe area
$64 @ June Mountain
$52 @ Timberline; Mt. Hood Oregon
$15 @ Powder Mountain; Ogden, UT
$42 @ Badger Pass; Western Sierra
$48 @ Sierra Summit; Western Sierra

I hope to ski Mammoth again this spring, as the Value Season takes effect on April 20th, but that still will cost me $69 per day. May have to make a trip to Lake Tahoe instead, just so I can afford to eat, sleep, etc.

They just started a buy 3 get the 4th free deal. That comes to $53 a day, it's good from 2-22 to 3/29. Straight from the website.

BTW that is one more $ than the BAF card.

Where are you going with this?

akjeff's right... i think they know how crowded the slopes are and they will continue to raise prices until they can get everything under control... but maybe not to $150! :D

It's never crowded the first hour or two of even the busiest days... besides what's better then hittin' the hill for an hour or two then blasting out to points unknown on the sleds... When the rest of you show up at 10:30 a.m. you can have my parking space at chair 2.

first come, first serve.

besides half those pass holders will only ride 10 or 12 times the entire season...

Got to agree with Skier Bob here - that's the beauty of the pass. although cold, the early mornings are always really nice until the spring freeze/thaw effect kicks in. But I can usually move around the mountain a bit and make it last until 11:30 to 12. The only thing I don't like about the early hour is the speeders that think no one else is on the slopes yet and don't LOOK for others - the ones that do look are not a problem for me. It's easy to leave lots of space between riders early.

I agree. My net productivity decreases exponentially with each month I go without a Mammoth trip - summer or winter.

or what they should do to make things realistic is to limit passes or to have the occaisional blackout date... it would help a lot for those saturday trips...

Mammoth should offer a So Cal value pass with black out dates based on something like Disneyland does. This way it would be fairly cheap for those that couldn't afford or missed the MVP and they can fill the days where the mountain is basically empty.
