Comet?

Postby ringo » Mon Feb 18, 2013 2:03 pm

Did anyone see a comet or a burning object streaking across the sky (east to west) just north of Mojave on hwy 14 (northbound) on Sunday evening 2/10 at 7:30pm? It was quite a sight, it shot right across the freeway burning and breaking up.

Did you go look for debris? Big bucks if you can find a piece.

That would be a meteorite not a comet. Seems to have been quite a few of them around the world the last few days including the massive one in Russia that caused so much damage.

Never saw anything like this. It was as big as a small plane, completely on fire and breaking up as it moved across the sky on a decent into the desert. It was dark outside and I didnt feel like stopping, as I was on my way to Mammoth. It was an amazing site.

A meteorite is a mineral found on earth that survived the pass through the atmosphere.
A meteor is what flies through space and collides with the atmosphere.
I used to be with it, then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with, isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me. It'll happen to yoooouuu.

What he saw breaking off were the meteorites... :P

Apparently it's a meteoroid that flies through space and hits the atmosphere. What you see is a meteor: "the glowing particles that it sheds in its wake is called a meteor, or colloquially a 'shooting star' or 'falling star'". The pieces that survive the impact and hit the ground are meteorites.

Thanks for the correction.

I googled the event, date and time. Nothing came up from the search.

My uncle in Vermont used to have a meteorite on his back porch, about the same shape and size as a top hat.

I was up in Mammoth about 6 or 7 years ago for a meteor shower and went out to a hot spring to watch it. We saw one that looked to be the size of the full moon and it was green too. A bolide lit up like a flash going off bright enough to light up the whole area like daylight. Really impressive! There were a couple of Aussies in the group and one said he saw more meteors that night than he had in his entire life. It definitely was a great show and a perfect location to watch it.
