What he saw breaking off were the meteorites... :P
Apparently it's a meteoroid that flies through space and hits the atmosphere. What you see is a meteor: "the glowing particles that it sheds in its wake is called a meteor, or colloquially a 'shooting star' or 'falling star'". The pieces that survive the impact and hit the ground are meteorites.
