I guess that growing up in L.A. and OC spoiled me. And now that I'm up here and on my own to make great food the food in the dives in Mammoth just don't cut it. Also I have great cooks that come and stay with me.

If you want the best of the best in Mammoth go to this place.

Just read the menu, it does look amazing. Funny, on their home page they have a quote from a yelp.com review by Molly D. She's one on my oldest friends, went to 1st through high school with her. Not that it has anything to do with the restaurant but I laughed when I saw her name and had to call her. She said it really was great. I'll try it.

Re: Angel's re-open for lunch! Shogun remodeled!

Postby Sierra Lady » Fri Feb 01, 2013 11:33 pm

Went to lunch last Wednesday at Angel's. They re-opened for lunches about 2 weeks ago. Apparently there was a small ad in one of the papers, but I missed it. A girlfriend told me it had finally opened again for lunches so we met there.

She had the spicy Cuban sandwich and said it was really delicious. I had one of my favorites the Asian Chicken Salad. It's not served in the deep clear bowl any longer, but in a smaller shallow bowl and it seemed like much less food, but it was still as good as I remembered. However I feel the $10.95 price was far too high so I probably won't be ordering that again too soon. :(

Met SKIPUNK for Happy Hour at Shogun this afternoon since I'd been wanting to see their remodeled restaurant. Hadn't been in there in a year! The place looks great with a new paint job, new flooring, they opened up some walls in the entryway and the walls between booths in the dining room, took out the mirrors on the walls in the bar, put in new light fixtures throughout and the restrooms were nicely re-done, too. We shared a large saki, enjoyed $3.00 spicy scallop hand rolls and $3.00 veggie tempura (HH menu 5:00-6:00 included drink specials, too) ordered two regular priced rolls to share and SP had an additional sashimi. Cost for the two of us was around $60. Everything tasted fresh and delicious! :y:

Went to Angels. Wont ever return. Are those mice ( or RATS) you see scurrying about when you leave via the north single door?

Re: Local restaurant reviews - post here! CJ's Grill

Postby Sierra Lady » Sat Feb 16, 2013 12:31 am

We'd only been to CJ's Grill once not long after it opened a few years ago and we really enjoyed it. Just about every food item is homemade as are their spices and sauces. Since prices are in the medium-high range it's not a place we could afford to go often, but decided to make our Valentine evening reservations there and had an excellent dinner with them last night.

My soup was the Chicken Florentine and it was absolutely mouthwatering good...I could have eaten 2 more bowls of it! Since I am a big lover of mac 'n cheese and heard how good theirs was I ordered this and had the rare 5 oz. flat iron steak on top of it:

BUILD YOUR OWN MACARONI & CHEESE

Macaroni noodles tossed with our homemade cheese sauce. Add your choice of: grilled chicken, grilled shrimp, 5oz flat iron or hot dog and your choice of sauce: buffaQ, buffalo, bbq, marinara

O-M-G, it is THE BEST mac 'n cheese I've ever tasted and the steak was perfectly rare and tender! I gave a tiny portion of the pasta to SG to try and he agreed it was the best m&c he'd ever eaten also.

He ordered this:

Steaks
Our steaks are grilled on the flat top with our house seasonings. Served with choice of house salad, caesar salad or soup of the day and one side item

12-ounce New York Strip | 28.

He enjoyed the nice large salad first. As good as the steak was cooked with tasty homemade spices, he said it was too thin, and a bit dry and tough. He didn't notice their steaks weren't traditionally grilled, but grilled on a flat top. He did however devour the steamed veggies saying they were cooked to perfection and very fresh.

For dessert I ordered their pink Valentine cheesecake with Oreo cookie crust with ganache icing that was to die for and SG just loved their homemade mint chocolate chip ice cream. They even brought him a taste of their homemade cinnamon ice cream and SG said he was going to have that next time.

Our server Nick was delightful and attentive and the place was pretty busy. Jason (co-owner with his wife Carrie) was serving meals and checking on how the patrons were enjoying them. Our meal was just over $60 (no alcohol) and we know we can keep it well under that in the future now that SG knows not to order steaks there. We're looking forward to returning there in the future. :y:

Two years ago, I gave a great review of Red Lantern. Took some friends there Saturday night. We had reservations at 5:45. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted with, "Sorry, but we're completely booked tonight." We told them we had reservations and they sat us in an empty restaurant. We were immediately met by the waitress and we ordered our food. From that point on, I was completely embarrassed. The tea was luke warm, the food was below par, the service was horrible. We had to get up and serve ourselves water. Our sodas were never refilled. We had to go over to the kitchen to get our jasmine rice. The Lo mien noodles were mush (inedible). My friend pulled up the Red Lantern on Yelp and he showed me they were rated 2 1/2 stars. I don't get it? By the reviews and my experience, this place must be a hit and miss.

Btw, when we left at 7:30, the place was still empty. Why would they turn away business and claim they are fully booked?

I can see Red Lantern out my front window. Went over there mid week one nlght last year. No cars and no one had gone in. We walked across the street to try it. The hostess said we needed a reservation that they were booked. There was no one there. The girl next to the hostess semmed like she wanted to seat us but the hostess repeated that we needed a reservation. We left and went to Tied Up. Their loss I will never go back...........

This past weekend we had a great dinner at CJ's Grill. It was my first time there and will definitely not be my last. We enjoyed the Soft Pretzel Bites, Crab Cakes, Wedge Salad and Fish and Chips. They may not sound exciting but everything was prepared wonderfully and with care. On top of that, the prices were more than reasonable. I will definitely spend my money here from now on!

Went back to Campo on Thursday night with the family. Glad we made a reservation, pretty busy night. The food was fabulous and the service was just as good, so I'm sold on them after two good meals. Sissy said it makes the list of places we have to go to when we're up there. On a sadder note, went to Thai'd Up earlier in the week and the quality and flavor of the food definitely went downhill. It's off the list.

Hubby and I went to Chinese Wok 'n' Roll for lunch today. The place was empty, too bad 'cause the food was very colorful, very hot (temperature, not too spicy), very LARGE portions, and very affordable. We will definitely visit them again.

Tried CJ's for the first time last weekend. Now, it's my favorite Mammoth restaurant. They did everything right. Finally someone serves a great dinner salad that's included with the meal. The salad is plentiful, great ingredients and the serving bowl is oversized (meaning, you can eat your salad without worrying about pieces falling out). The suggested Orange Vinaigrette dressing was tasty.

Loved the pretzel bites (the jalapeno cheese sauce could've been a little spicier, but the flavor was right on). I had the Southern Platter (BBQ pulled pork and fried chicken) and it was wonderful. My wife had the Talapia and she said it was served perfectly and the flavors mixed witht he Talapia were great.

Service was wonderful and attentive. The manager/owner also checked up on us a few times.

Thanks everyone for the recommendation.

^ Glad you had a good dining experience at CJ's. We will be returning as well.

We were in Bishop all afternoon yesterday taking our elderly friend to the dentist, so when we arrived back in town late afternoon we decided to go out for dinner. Actually, we first stopped at Tom's Place but their cafe was closed until closer to fishing season. We were then thinking of Base Camp Cafe, but they were closed (It sold to a new owner - since Skip passed away his sister was responsible for the restaurant - been seeing an ad in the papers for the last month for cooks & servers so wondering if everyone quit on the new owner who lives down south & has no previous restaurant experience. :worried: )

Anyway, ended up at Angel's and they sure have their act together since they reopened under new ownership. We both tried different dishes again...I had their tri tip salad with Balsamic dressing (comes with crumbled bleu cheese, but I asked our server to leave that off) that was just delicious and a big portion. SG had the fish and chips, his fish fillets were large and fluffy with a good sized serving of fries and he said it was very good and filling. Our server Tammy has only worked there 3 days, but she was sweet and very attentive. Jorge, the manager, stopped by our table several times to see if everything was to our satisfaction. :y: :y:
