Our Campo Mammoth review.

Postby Sierra Lady » Thu Dec 20, 2012 10:54 pm

We went to Campo this evening for a one-day late birthday dinner for SG. They were very busy, but we got right in. Unfortunately, we were very disappointed, but our server was friendly, attentive and sympathetic in listening to why we didn't care for our dishes and knocked items off our bill. Prices to us were on the "Mammoth" high side.

SG ordered the Campo pizza and I the spaghetti and a cup of soup of the day which was cauliflower (the soup was the only thing that WAS delicious) even though they forgot to bring my soup and it came after my entree. I don't want to go into the details here since this restaurant is new and they obviously have some kinks to work out. If you want the details feel free to send me a PM and I'll explain.

SG said he doesn't care to go back (he's not much into foo-foo food anyway), but I may give it a try again in a few months.

Finally made it to Angels tonight. The food was good but they couldn't find my mug and it was really cold inside because they ran out of propane and couldn't get the heater or fireplace going. For a little while they had to turn away customers! Hopefully things will get better. What a bummer they don't hang the mugs anymore.

Good luck Angels.

Went to Z Ranch tonight. Burgers were great restaurant was really cold. I won't be back. The meal should be comfortable and clean. Neither of which I experienced tonight. Health department should really take a look at this place.

No, no Elway.....they're keeping the loyal customers mugs at another location. Yours should be available when you visit.

I went to Jimmy's Taverna last time I was up and the lamb chops were excellent. It was a mixed bag for everything else, mostly that some of the food wasn't served hot. This place has potential as it is different menu than the normal stuff served around town which to me seems like variations of the same theme. Excellent wine list too, by far the best in town.

Ordered pizzas from Z pizza at 4:30 on Saturday and they said it would be 1.5 hours!!!!! Soooooo, we showed up at 7 to pick up our order and we were informed that they haven't been made but "we'll get right on it!" NO THANKS, and thanks Z Pizza for ruining our evening. If you're too busy, just say so. I'll go someplace else.

First trip up this year & we went to Angel's. Last May it was completely gutted & now it has been been completely redone & they did a fantastic job! Must have cost a fortune. New plumbing, electrical, flooring, walls, & fixtures. Beautiful stone veneer wall on the front window side. The bathrooms are truly magnificent, quality all the way.

This being said, who cares if the food/service sucks, & they did not! I had the ribs, Carol had the brisket & we both liked them. The Vanilla milkshake was damn good as well. The menu had something for everyone, & they still have the scones!

Don't know if it was because it was New Years Day or not but we got there at 5:00 & got the last table. It was packed & very noisy but I'm glad to have Angel's back & better than ever as it is just a couple of blocks from our motel.
If it's worth doing, it's worth doing to excess.

RBS, SG and I went to the new old Angel's this evening a little after 6:00. They were pretty busy, but we were lucky to get seated right away then the place really filled up fast after that with patrons in the waiting area.

As PP said, the remodel of the interior (plus a fresh paint job on the exterior) looks very nice. They changed up some of the corner seating into booths, much nicer lighting/fixtures, shortened the bar and added some small tall tables with stools at the west end of the bar. The restrooms were moved further south (away from the kitchen) and enlarged/remodeled and are actually very nice.

Our service was excellent (nice to see Mammoth Kate from the forum again) and she never failed to check back with us throughout our meal and bring more drinks/water. They brought out fresh scones and RBS and SG liked theirs, but mine was a bit doughy for me and because they didn't serve the old honey butter, but just regular butter, I thought the scone had no flavor.

RBS had the half rack of pork ribs which she said was tender and delicious, but she didn't care for the baked beans which she said had no flavor. SG had the meatloaf which had a mushroom dark gravy on it and thought it tasted better than their previous meatloaf they used to serve. His came with a side of beans, but he had ordered mashed potatoes so they just let him keep the beans and brought him the potatoes immediately. His second side was mac 'n cheese which he enjoyed. I ate the salmon which was a huge fillet and oh so tender with a delectable butter/dill sauce on top. The steamed veggies on the side (cauliflower/yellow squash/zucinni) were thinly sliced and steamed just right in a light dill butter and were so yummy. I had the side of mac 'n cheese which I thought was very tasty. :y: :y:

It looked like many of the old favorites were still on the menu and they have added some new items such as the salmon I had tonight.

We were told they would be re-opening for lunches in about 2 more weeks also adding a special lunch menu as well as their regular menu. I always enjoyed going to Angel's for lunch so I look forward to going back soon during the day.

There's only one place in Mammoth that I will spend my money on a dinner or lunch anymore. To me all the rest are mediocre places to eat. I guess that growing up in L.A. and OC spoiled me. And now that I'm up here and on my own to make great food the food in the dives in Mammoth just don't cut it. Also I have great cooks that come and stay with me.

If you want the best of the best in Mammoth go to this place.
