Not necessarily local news but this is cool; from the sacbee

A trove of some 6,500 letters to and from renowned California conservationist John Muir is now available on the Internet.

The University of the Pacific in Stockton, where the letters are housed, announced the new online access today in cooperation with UC Berkeley's Bancroft Library. The project was funded with a $111,181 grant from the California State Library.

"John Muir's correspondence offers a unique first-hand perspective on his thoughts and experiences," Shan Sutton, associate dean and head of special collections at Pacific, said in a statement.

The archive of correspondence includes full-text transcriptions that can be viewed alongside images of the original Muir letters. Many of the letters involve discussions between Muir - considered a founder of the American environmental and parks movement - and other leading figures of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The archive joins other Muir material held by Pacific, previously made available online, including drawings, journals and photographs.

I've read a few of Muirs books. Many are in the form of the letters he wrote. My first summer in the sierra is a good one.
Will make you appreciate and miss the Sierra more.

Cruise of the Corwin. That's another great one. Details his trip aboard a steam ship to Alaska. Believe it is before his travels to the Sierras. When he travels to the Sierra that first summer btw, he walks from Martinez, Contra Costa county. Formerly his home, presently home of his historic house and landmark
