Earthquake!

I was living in Toluca Lake, backside of Universal Studio's, when the '72 quake struck. The one thing that is still in my mind was that it hit right after the new wing of the Northridge Medical Center was dedicated. It was all fitted with the latest anti earthquake technology of the time...

Well the new wing fell over during the quake but the old original wing of the hospital survived pretty much intact. It was damaged but it was still standing...

How's that...

Remember taking our neighbor to check on Toluca Lake Elementary school on Feb. 9,'72. She worked there..
Jan. 17,'94 - That sure was some bad news. Living in Sherman Oaks in our neighborhood there wasn't an apt. or condo that was left standing. Too much to describe. Non stop sirens for days... I really don't like earthquakes.

mammoth quake kept me from buyin Tom's Place back then good thing I didn't, as it later collapsed under the weight of snow -- the shop that is --

My mom and friend were in Mammoth visiting in May 1980 when that large e.q. hit. They were both "camping" and sleeping in my mom's RV when the e.q. woke her girlfriend who was screaming, but my mom never woke up or felt it!

The '72 quake was the first big one i felt. Favorite part - had just woken up and was listening to music on the radio - the radio went silent and then the disc jockey said "Oh God!" Was also there for all but one of the big quakes in Mammoth in the 80's. really didn't feel comfortable taking the gondola for a bit after those, a co-worker was on it for the first quake which was around 10 AM but it was May and the old gondola. The gondola was fine but wouldn't run afterwards. We had a lot of glass fall off the shelves in those. Then the trees started dying and the movie and press got going - it was right after Mt. St. Helens blew up. And they built the escape road - er, Mammoth Scenic loop.

I've been wondering if the CO2 levels in the soil around Horseshoe are going down - it looks like some small trees are starting to grow a bit further down the slope now.
