It just amazes me that someone could look at those petroglyphs and think it would be okay to cut them out. Of course they probably did it to sell them but still...just the idea that you could think about damaging something like that blows me away.

I hope they are able to prosecute these idiots and send a STRONG message that it won't be tolerated.

They really should do something with the perps in the town square...

Read the article...it says the perps have not been caught, yet.

If and when they catch the rat ba$tards the penalty could be carried out using a saw like the one they used on the glyphs... Just a thought.

SnowHeart, thanks for posting that link...what incredible great news! :y: ^_^ It would be awesome if the BLM or members of the tribe could figure out a way to place the pieces back even if they still will look damaged.

As Cruzer said, when they do (if they do) ever catch the perps I hope the law trims off each one of their fingers off using masonry tools. :fubar:

At the same time some idiots just defaced a major section of the Chalfant glyphs with huge initials. It was done within the last three months since I was there last.

This is like a band aid on the aorta.

It is about educating people that this type of vandalism is actually wrong and something to be ashamed of.

Another idiot ruined the Keough 1881 glyph at Fish Slough by pecking in his own authentic reproduction petroglyph.

Not to mention the hundreds of bullet holes that deface every petroglyph panel that can be accessed by vehicle.

These people are culture thieves.

Being that they were returned I suspect they never left the area and were stolen by locals, and they eventually will be caught.

All they have to do is look for the cig butts and empty beer cans strewn all over the ground. Maybe some shell casings and skeet targets.

Sierra Wave News 2/8/13:

BLM asks for public help on petroglyph case

Anyone with information can call anonymously either of two BLM investigators at 760-937-0657 or 760-937-0301. Lovato had earlier said that reward funds totaling $9,000 have been donated or pledged for information leading to the conviction of those responsible.

To bad Bishop is so close to all these great historic spots. Also drunk Indians with cheap ammo dont help anything. Last time I was at Keogh I wanted to scalp those dirtbags who had thrashed the grounds..............seriously depressing.

"Also drunk Indians with cheap ammo dont help anything..."

I understand what you are saying, although I see more of the white man's leftover casings, skeet frags, shot up glass and cans and other assorted bullshit. I also see a lot of OHV damage, trash dumping and yes, cultural resource site damage.

I have also experienced being shaked down by a cop who went overboard trying to protect these sites.

That ain't nothin' compared to what the culture thieves have done to Chalfant Valley. I want to get on my knees and cry, because I see damage that was done two months ago as bad as these stolen petroglyphs everyone is so concerned about.
