Dog friendly outdoors

Postby PE395 » Tue Jan 08, 2013 3:54 pm

Some friends are bringing a pooch up this weekend. Where are some spots where it's okay, or at least not frowned upon to walk/hike/snowshoe with a dog? It'll be the little guy's first adventure in the snow. For instance, I've heard complaints about dogs/pooh in the Shady Rest XC area. Thanks.

June, I can show you lots of great places to let the dog loose. Petey can show him around too.

A beer at the Tiger will be in order after the dogs play...

Dogs on leashes (Town & USFS ordinance) are welcome on the Mammoth Nordic/Shady Rest trails. There is a doggie bag dispenser right at the trailhead! The problem isn't anywhere as bad as it used to be out there once certain dog owners (after they got cited for dogs off leash & not cleaning up pooh) began taking their pets out to where they stop plowing the Sherwin Creek Road near the propane tank farm beyond "The Station" (the meadow area off Old Mammoth Rd). You could take your friends' pooch out there, too.

Just watch out for brown klister! :o

Thanks SL, I think I know the area out past where Sherwins Restaurant used to be. OGT, I'll let you know if we head over to your 'hood.

You can go back down out of town and go off the old frontage road by Mammoth Creek. If you are like me, you will go where other people are not to avoid conflict, rules and all that other stuff.

The Sherwin Creek area is great, especially if you put on some snow shoes or x-country skis and head across the meadow and into the hills with the pooch.

Also, we like to park where they stop plowing Old Mammoth Road and hike/ski/snow shoe up to Lake Mary Road.

The dog will have a blast but please clean up after your dog.
