Postby woollyskeeper » Wed Jul 01, 2009 11:41 am

Gentlemen (and women), lube your chains, bleed your brakes and don your full-faced helmets: the Panorama Gondola will open to mountain bikes on Friday, July 3. Flow, Kamikaze, Shock Treatment, Velocity and Richter are slated for downhillers. And Off the Top, Mountain View, Shortcut, Brake Through and Trail Home are on deck for the cross-country set. Regular season pricing ($39/adults; $20/kids) also goes into effect on July 3.

The following trails are also scheduled to be open:

(For the cross-country rider)

* Uptown
* Downtown
* Paper Route
* Big Ring
* Timber Ridge
* Juniper
* Lakes Trail

(For the downhiller)

* Shotgun
* Lower Bullet
* Lower Follow Me

Watch for the new paved berm on "Off the Top" and a new 58-ft long bridge/jump on Upper Bullet over Paper Route.

Off-the-Top was in the best condition that I have seen it with the exception of the section from the gondola and several snow fields. The berm is a great improvement and most of the switchbacks were clean. Upper Shock Treatment was in good shape with the exception of a lack of chicken wire on the ramps which really is not necessary. Lower Shock Treatment still has some snow on it, but otherwise is in good shape. The X-Zone at the bottom of Kamikaze is as fun as ever.

I was disappointed in Velocity. Mammoth should have kept it closed until they could have done a lot of trail maintenance. Most of it is OK with snow below the Hillary Steps and the lower part by Main Lodge needs considerable cleanup, IMHO.

Pushed up the fire road to Breakthrough which was good with the exception of a large pile of snow part way down that you could easily go around. Flow was in good shape to include the drop which one in our party did. Pipeline is in good shape although not much if anything has/needs been done on it.

Great weather, so all-in-all, a good day!!!
Cheers,
Jim

Bullet is good, but loose, from the top with the exception of a few snow fields on the first quarter. The new bridge over Upper Paper Route is good with a low angle roll off of the backside. Lower Shock Treatment is almost clear of snow as of yesterday. Twilight Zone can be accessed via Velocity by cutting to the right in the clear area before the big ramp. Heard that Juniper was good as well.

Good Riding.
