Hiking & Volunteer Trail Work Opps

Postby mammothmatilda » Thu Jun 25, 2009 11:31 am

Couple of fun and fulfilling things to do over the July 4 holiday in/around Mammoth. Not only will you earn super bonus good karma, you could earn a free Reds Meadow shuttle pass! Go to http://www.friendsoftheinyo.org to find out about hikes and trips happening later this summer.

Reds Meadow Trail Work July 1-6
Join Friends of the Inyo and the Backcountry Horsemen of California on a trail work trip out of Reds. In exchange for trail work, volunteers get FREE entry into the valley, camping, breakfasts and dinners, plus pack stock support (mules to carry your stuff). Wednesday night we'll camp near Devils Postpile (at a special, beautiful spot), then Thursday we'll head down the Fish Creek trail and spend Thursday and night in the backcountry (two words: hot springs). Over the weekend, we'll do work on the King Creek Trail and camp at Devils Postpile.
Come for one or two days or the whole time! If you work at least three days, you earn a free shuttle pass. RSVP to me or explore@friendsoftheinyo.org.

Yost Meadow to Glass Creek Meadow Hike July 4
So maybe you're not the parade type--or maybe you're staying in June Lake. Here's the perfect way to celebrate freedom: hike an amazing, seldom-used route full of flowers that beat any fireworks! The eight-mile trek starts at the Fern Creek trailhead in June Lake, heads up the trail to Yost Meadow, part of the newly designated Owens Headwaters Wilderness. Then the route goes cross-country down to Glass Creek Meadow, one of the area's hidden gems. Hike leader Paul McFarland will talk about flora, fauna and geology along the way. A shuttle car brings hikers back to Fern Creek. Meet at the Fern Creek Trail at 8 a.m. Bring sun protection, water and lunch. Wilderness hikes are limited to 15 participants--please RSVP to explore@friendsoftheinyo.org.
