Hiking trails...need some advice

Postby ILoveRobertosTacos » Tue May 19, 2009 10:14 am

I didn't think I was going to make it this weekend, but my son wants to "swing" by (From San Diego to Ventura Co), fetch me, so I get to come!

Besides rainbow falls/devil's postpile, what other great hiking trails would you suggest? I've heard of Mammoth Crest and that it's a must do, but where is it?

Just an FYI, would love to hike near a stream if possible.

Besides rainbow falls/devil's postpile

Road not likely to be open this weekend.

Tuolumne Meadows if Tioga is open. They have probably plowed the road around the lakes above Tamarack Lodge, but there's likely quite a bit of snow on the ground still. One Memorial weekend when Tioga was closed we did a hike to a lake from the Sonora Pass road.

Anything above 9000 feet in the trees or north facing may still have quite a bit of snow on it. You should think about the hike around Convict Lake (short), Sherwin lakes & vicinity (may still have snow in spots) or Hot Creek if you stay close to Mammoth. Otherwise, check for some of the lower elevation hikes along the way or further up 395. Mammoth Creek can be a nice walk too - especially if there's a car waiting for you down by 395.

PS - this thread could probablly be moved to summer activities

McGee Creek Trail might be worth a try

I did Mammoth Crest last summer. The trailhead is at Lake George. I must say it's rather strenuous given the elevation and distance. As oldhiker said, any hikes from the Lakes and you are bound to be hittng a lot of snow on the trails.

There are a lot of shorter hikes from the lakes that I enjoy (if accessible this time of year). We like to pack a good lunch and hike out to a nice lake and relax. I always liked Crystal lake. Minaret Falls and Lower Rainbow falls is also a good one from the Devils Postpile/Reds Meadow area.

I've been going on quite a few hikes lately and there is still some snow in the higher elevations, but it hasn't been too much of a problem. Inyo Crater is a nice easy hike and there is quite a bit of water in the bottom which makes for nice views. Rock creek lake is easily accessible and is a nice walk going around the lake. Hoping to get up to the higher lakes above rock creek lake in the next week or so. About to take off to McGee creek. I'll post how the conditions our.

Thanks! Wow...too many choices. I'm not sure how I'll choose.

P.S. I like hilly hikes much more than flat. Really like to climb. Maybe that will narrow down my choices. Again, thanks!

Just did that the other day. I'll post some pics later. The next day I did the Glass Creek trail, another very nice hike. It was cool to get a look at June Mt. from the other side. Petey loved both hikes.

I tried to get up to big mcgee lake on wed, but ran into too much snow around 10,000 feet making it too difficult to follow the trail. We got to about a quarter mile from the lake and had to turn around. Quite disappointing, but a nice hike to that point none the less. I think I'm going to make another attempt in a week or so at getting up there.

The Mammoth Ranger District Visitors Center has just started a list of open trials which they are updating as conditions change. It indicates that almost everything in the higher elevations is pretty snow bound (unless you like postholeing). Have fun.
