A night out @ San Gorgonio

Postby maxpower88 » Fri Oct 05, 2012 1:32 pm

I wanted to get in one more backpacking trip before the winter sets in and the temps really plummet, I just didn’t have the energy to drive 700 miles so I decided on SoCal’s highest peak for a night out. It was just an overnighter but brutal as hell, 4700 vertical feet over 11 miles and no water for the last 8 miles so that meant packing all my water to the summit (plus beer). I arrived at the South Fork trailhead at 10:30am and made it to the summit by 4pm, check it out...

lol kook.

Love it up there. Try the Fish Creek entry for a bit of a change. Even some aspens that might be going off.
I used to be with it, then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with, isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me. It'll happen to yoooouuu.

LMAO, kook is right.

I last did that overnite hike in August of '89. Went with a co-worker from the Fish Creek route, past the still-green-leaved Aspen Grove creekside spot (or was that a detour?).

Hiked from Friday night to some spot near 9,000', then summited the next day (1ish?) and spent Saturday night up there. I was sleeping (no tent) in the northeastern-most rock-shelter on the summit. Windy night, hard to keep the little Primus packer-stove going at times, heating up the baked beans and chicken. Jets flying directly overhead all night. Due to the altitude and some thirst I had a million dreams throughout the nite. Broke camp and hauled ass back to the truck Sunday morn. Back home by 4 PM or so.

We saw one kook up there looking like Rambo with his face all painted-up with camoflauge and carrying a longbow. Gave us a threatening look as we passed him on the trail. Freak!

Anyhoo, thanks for the great TR, Max. I gotta go hiking with you one of these days..

Awesome. Note to self. Don't touch the sign. It definitely has cooties.
