Another backcountry quest.

Postby Grumpy » Wed Sep 19, 2012 1:00 pm

But alas this one was not fulfilled. There is a lot of country for Deer to hide and they are really good at it. Or I am a really bad Deer hunter. Just got off the trail and I need a shower and a bacon cheeseburger. I will upload more pics later. You do get some funny looks when you are heading up the trail with a high powered rifle as opposed to a fly rod.

Must be nice to be able to take a boat into hunt deer. That's a nice one and put a lot meat on the table. I hope I can get x9a next year because as much as i love hiking and walking around the backcountry, it would be really hard to get a deer out of where we were.

Hitting Duck Pass on the way in.

Looking North to where we should have gone. Fish Creek and the hills behind the Ritter Range.

Lots of granite

My first attempt at a Milky way shot.

Over looking Purple Lake in the morning. I forgot to change the ISO back so it's grainy.

We hiked up to the pass between Ram Lakes and Virginia Lake hoping to find a sign of migration over into Laurel Canyon.

The brown looking mountain in the background is the backside of Bloody

after glassing for a few hours we headed back down to Glen Lake

We started to see signs in one of the many drainages back towards a small tarn near camp.

Wish I would have brought a shotgun. Grouse for dinner would have been a nice treat.

We spent a lot of time hunting this watering hole but never saw a single deer. There were a lot of tracks and deer crap over by Ram Lakes so we spent some time there sitting, glassing, and sitting some more.

Some of the only wildlife we saw, other than the Grouse. This frog was about the size of my thumb nail.

A few shots from camp.

On our way out we stopped to look at the meadows near Purple Lake. Why there wasn't a a few bucks out in this meadow frolicking about is beyond me.

Going here next time.

Never get tired of Duck Lake

No deer but it was nice to get out in the backcountry. The next time I am heading down to Fish Creek or hunting the hills behind Iron Mountain. If that doesn't produce I am going to wait until the first snowfall and head back to the outlet of Duck Lake and wait until the herd comes up and over the pass. At least then I can put the animal on a sled and tow it out rather than carry it or hire a pack station to haul it for me.

Beautiful shots, Grumpy. You did a nice job with the Milky Way one. Thanks for sharing.
