My Bad Luck Spot on Downtown

Postby DataJunkie » Sat Sep 01, 2012 7:47 pm

My trip to Mammoth is not complete without a run on Downtown. I love riding my bike in Mammoth, but I am far from novice on the mountain biking trails (meaning, whatever comes before novice). I joke that it is not a trip to Mammoth without me riding Downtown and crashing into something, and I swear, it is always in the same spot. This time, it was a tree.

I am curious if any familiar knows where/what I am talking about. I actually got the GPS coordinates this time so when I crash again, I will know if I am correct. It is a sharp turn towards the end of the trail right after a sustained downhill run where there is a very large bank of soft sand. Towards the end, there are two signs that have yellow arrows on them, but no label. I remember this curve is between the two signs. It is the only such turn that has so much soft sand built up. I end up entering too fast and losing control. ;-Z

If anyone is curious, the coordinates are below, though I doubt this helps:

37.65354,-118.99324

Of course, this wouldn't be a problem if I got more practice ;-)

[PS The first 20% of the trail seems atrocious this year. So many roots, dips, rocks and potholes I don't remember]

I know the exact spot you are talking about! You just needs some wider tires on your bike 8-)
