The Braaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap thread (snowmobiles)

Postby brahm » Mon Nov 09, 2009 12:29 pm

We went a bit off topic in the barter section, I say it's good time we have a thread about snowmobiles on here. I'll start, who's gone on a mammoth snowmobile adventure, or who's got your own? What do you have, where do you ride, when do you ride, what do you think of them, and what's your post ride yodler bev of choice!

Me,
I've got a 07' Rev 800 151, and 01 Arctic 136, nothing like getting fresh turns on a sled where you can get your turns in both while going up hill and down, and exploring the bc with a camera getting to places that most people never see in there winter. This will be my 4th season out riding, and am really looking forward to it. Spent a good part of summer learning how to work on 2stroke motors and tuning up my ski doo. I usually ride Saturday & Sunday, and tend gravitate around the ridge, flats, or some secret sports off the K trail. I'm hoping to spend a bit more time this season on the shewin side of things before we loose the area, and finally make it up to Sanora Pass.

I've done mammoth snowmobile adventures twice. Non-guided tour is way better than a guided tour.

2 seasons ago me and some friends rented some arctic cat short track sleds up in south lake tahoe and towed em down to Iron Mtn. Damn was that fun! That is one awesome place to ride snomos and get some turns in too if you want.

I got my first sled in 2004. It was a Yamaha Vmax 600 with a 121" track. It was a great trail sled but always got stuck in the powder. The next year I upgraded to a 2004 Polaris RMK 800 144". This was a great sled that put me places I shouldn't have been. I originally bought the sled for ski access but sled skiing turned out to be slednecking more often than skiing. I just bought an 08 Polaris Dragon 700 155" . It's sitting in my driveway begging to be ridden. I hope we get some snow soon because I am dying to beat the hell out of it.

I usually ride out of Shady or the Cinder shed. I've never made it to Sonora but plan on going this year with all my free time. The Sherwins are fun when there's a lot of snow as is Mono Craters. I've been out to Bodie but need to hit Virginia Lakes. Solitude Canyon behind the motocross track is fun but someone always seems to break something back there.

Posted these for skimike in the off topic area but it got burried.

For skimike. I hope you're ready to not ski anymore.

I think the correct term for snowmobilers was given by the recent episode of "South Park" (but dealt with Harley riders). I think the term would cover snowmobilers

Speaking of Brats. I want to get one of those hot doggers so I can cook brats on the trail.

I've skipped the Yodler since they went Patina and have been going to see Kristen at Tusks or Zack at Dry Creek. Dry Creek is the best for a night ride since you can pull right up to the front door.

ah ya good call. My first sled was a used/retired Mtn Ops sled I picked up from the mountain. 550 Fan cooled, with 8000+ Miles on it, it was pretty fun to ride but I learned quickly I needed a mountain sled, going off trail was quite the adventure.

Any of you guys watch any of this years 09/10 snowmobile movies. I just watched 45 Degrees north this weekend, it was pretty good. I'm looking forward to the new 509, and 2 stroke cold smoke video.

Funny you say that, I made the same post over on snowest forums in regards to a discussion about putting loud exhaust on your sleds (nobody got it), personally I prefer to keep em quite. Most of the loud pipes don't do anything for performance.

I picked up the muffpot last year from MPS.. I was surprised when they had them. I haven't installed it yet but I've had delusions of this year, cooking a tri-tip roast on my sled hahaha.

Years ago, in another life, I bought a Polaris Super Sport and went halves on a trailer for two snomos with my boyfriend, since he had his own snomo, but used to haul it around in the bed of his truck. He had gotten tired of me riding on the back of his (it wasn't a long track) because he couldn't go very fast, so he convinced me to purchase my own, saying he'd help me with the payments (that might have happened about twice! :o ). We'd go out riding together, but soon, I would find myself alone for awhile before he'd double back to find me. Once I rolled my sled on a steep side hill because I didn't have the strength to lean into it and keep it upright. I just sat there in the snow crying, looking at my rolled sled down the hill waiting for him, as usual, since he had taken off on a pow day ahead of me and never looked back. Needless to say, I sold the sled the following season, made him buy out my half of the trailer and washed my hands of all three of them! :x

About 4 years ago, several employees and myself in my old office were offered a comp half day guided ride with Mammoth Snowmobile Adventures and we had a blast!!

My husband and I been riding Mammoth for 5 seasons now. I've a Polaris 800 Vertical Escape 151 and my hubby has a tricked out Polaris Vertical Edge 800 159.Last year our son started to ride as well on his Polaris RMK 800 151.
We ride everywhere we can find snow plus some great secret spots..........mostly Saturday & Sunday after skiing the mountain.
The Yodler is back.....................
Can't wait to ride again................

That was probably an appropriate decision. I like your style :P

I bought my 06' RMK 900 without ever riding one. My friend who has the Crowley ice tree had several and always ranted about how much fun they were. Not knowing a thing about them but riding motorcross for years the only thing I knew was I wanted to climb hills like a bat out of hell. The 900 did this no problem. I could easily out climb and out run my friends sled. What I didn't realize until later is the sled wants a football field to turn around in. I ended up getting stuck on the side of McGee Mountain for 3 hours. I was high enough up that nobody could get up as high to give me a hand.

My snowmobile is like riding a bull. It has plenty of power, goes anywhere it wants, and that's the problem as it doesn't always go where I want. I'm much better at it now, but the sled occasionally still reminds me it's 540lbs ++
