Just in Caltrans to save millions by closing the roads when it snows and only plow when it stops snowing. :D

I agree completely. Nothing like it.
Don't use words too big for the subject. Don't say 'infinitely' when you mean 'very'; otherwise you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite.[C.S. Lewis]

Snow removal should be outsourced. Get non-union people doing it. Stop running overtime etc.

If they don't keep roads open for emergency vehicles they'll take a heap of heat over it. I don't think they want to go there

The Sierra wave article says morale is low due to the 18% pay cut they had to take. I say they're lucky they have jobs, I took a %20 cut in pay 2 months ago, so they need to shut the F up and do there job. Until the churn within Caltrans is the same as the churn in the private sector they're still getting paid to much.

It might just all work out for Caltrans since it doesn't look like we'll be getting any snow this season.

Im kind of pissed about this whole furlough stuff because when I was driving back to Tahoe from Mammoth yesterday evening I saw at least 7 different CHP's and 5 Mono County sheriffs on a the stretch of Highway from Lee Vining to Topaz. Why don't we cut down on the # of CHP's can Sheriffs. This seems extremely excessive, and if the State is so worried about money then why not cut down on the cops to a reasonable amount... instead of extreme overpopulation of them to give us Tickets. I got pulled over by a Mono County cop for going 66 in a 65- no joke. And got a ticket for no license plates... I have no name plates still because I just got a new car 2 weeks ago and he gave me a $550 ticket for no plates even though I have a current and valid paper in the window only 2 weeks old out of the 6months it is valid. I am definitely fighting this one. Cops are supposed to keep us safe... not harass us when we are lawful citizens.

Just got my first ticket in 20 years last week. I was trailering my snomo's to Mammoth and was cited for 65mph, when I should have only been going 55mph with the trailer. I read somewhere the CHP cites 115,000 drivers a day. If that's true that a hell of a revenue generator, and with the State being broke CHP is citing drivers for everything they can.

Dunno what the ticket will cost yet, but I'll post the fine on the forum when I get it.

They're still working on the highway between Indy and Lone Pine.

Granite Construction appears to be milking this one..

There's still a little work being done between Fort Indy and Indy

CHP is out in force - they are exempt from the furloughs. I expect that when they shift onto the new lanes near Manzanar, it will be a long 55 mph section - just like last year, if they replace the pavement on the old sections of highway. There's four new lanes right across from Manzanar though. and CHP will be waiting.

California's revenue shortfall situation is getting out of hand it would seem. I know alot of friends and co-workers that are getting tickets lately (unusually-so), for relatively minor things. Speeding 3 mph over the limit, one of two license plate lights being out, too-dark of car windows, questionable traffic manuevers, etc, etc..

Last week I drove back from Gardnerville (Nevada) and counted 11 cars/trucks pulled over (mid-day) on 395 before the Hwy 14 split by the ChiPs and Sheriffs. One minivan passed me at apx 62-63 mph and got a ticket soon after (I had the car's cc set at 60 mph, no worries). My general impression is that it is a feeding frenzy right now for law enforcement to cite people for any and everything they can think of. It really is all about $$$$$$ (taxation), not enforcing public safety,as in the past (back when there was a balanced budget).

I haven't had a speeding ticket in 5 years, but a friend of mine just completed traffic school and heard tales of alot of senior citizens and housewives getting tickets recently (spoken at that class), funding for the state's and whoever's recently-decreased coffers.

I'm driving 60-65 mph these days on 395 and the interstates, but think it stinks (I used to go 70 mph). The People's Republic of California merely needs to practice a little fiscal-restraint in the future, and not their previous goal of bloated budgets and huge bureaucracies.

Can't wait to retire somewhere not in this (undisciplined) state..

Hey, if you belong a AAA you can do almost all of your DMV at their offices. Seldom more than a 5 minute wait. Registration, transfer of ownership, Drivler's license renewal etc.
