Eagle Point UT/Snorkeling Elk Yurt:TR

Postby maxpower88 » Mon Mar 05, 2012 6:39 pm

Once again I found myself on the side of the 15 waiting to be picked up by SDmarkus for some misty BC adventure. This time it would be Eagle Point UT and the Snorkeling Elk Yurt for 4 days of insanity. Take a look...

Here we go.
Image

I think it’s snowing.

It’s going to be a good day.

3pm and still fresh lines.

Now 3.5 miles of skijoring followed by a 1.5 mile skin to the Snorkeling Elk Yurt...

So after skiing the resort all day we met Alec (yurt owner) loaded all our gear on the sleds and skijored up to Big John Flat.

We picked this untouched meadow for first tracks in the morning.

Final approach to the yurt and just in time for a beautiful sunset.

Back in the skinner! Snowmobilers made quick work of our fresh field though.

Love setting the skin track.

Last day at the yurt & Joules is ready to go.

Back in the skinner!

Notice anything unusual?
Image

Closer look.
Image

This kind of changed all of our plans for the day.

Image

Image

Maybe next time we can get up there.
Image

Follow the dog outta there!
Image

Time to roll.
Image

But first some more laps in our favorite meadow.

That’s all folks.

From the pics that I can see it looks like another great trip.
What photo host do you use ? How do you save your pics to be posted ? Yours are the only ones on the forum I have trouble seeing. Some are there but most are just blue box icons. Every time I re visit your post a couple more pics appear. Sometimes if I refresh the page a few times a few more show up. After a day or so they are all there.

Hey Max,

Regarding Elk Meadows/Eagle Point ski area...can you offer a glimpse into how operations look for the ski area? I ask because in the mid to late '70's a group of us used to go there when it was "brand new" with one lift, a small lodge building and the last couple of miles of road was gravel. I forget the owners name but he was a friend of one of my relatives, which is how we found out about this little resort outside of Beaver with the awesome pow. We used to bring up groceries and booze when we came up for a few days. It was like a private resort back then and an easy shot from So Cal.

I saw in your pix a couple shots of one of the lifts without the chairs. Two or three seasons ago it was listed for a million bucks and the pix in the sales site showed quite a bit of dis-repair from the multiple years of abandonment. Glad to see that someone picked up a jewel in the rough and is working to bring it back.

Any insight into how they're doing would be interesting, for me anyway.

Max, if you skiied/boarded over the top and down the other side of the Tushars towards HWY 89 and the Severe River Valley you would have ended up in my buddies back yard. We ride the ATV's from his place to Big John Flat in the summer.

Here is a shot from his place. He has 5 rental cabins. This is looking West into the Tushar Range

This was a few days ago.

Same place in the summer.

Just beautiful MP88. Loved the yurt! Looks like you and sdmarkus hit the jackpot!! :)

P-Ho, some of the photos didn't show up for me either. I right-clicked those icons and opened the images in another tab to view them.

Eagle Point has come along away, they paved the roads all the way to the lifts and installed a new high speed quad. The lift without chairs on it failed inspection and instead of repairing it they invested in a cat to bring all the skiers to the true summit. The story I heard about the ownership of EP was two business men in their 30’s from the East Coast bought it as an investment & personal ski resort for themselves. As far as operations go, I would compare EP to Mt Baldy, no one is really sure of anything and things kind of happen on a whim, the terrain is more like June but it holds pow WAY longer. The lodge was really nice with a killer menu and they had hot tubs on the deck for $8 a soak.

There were maybe 50 people at the resort when we were there on Friday and when we left on Monday there was LITERALLY 2 skiers (that we could see) on the mountain. Hopefully business picks up for them so they can stay open, the snowpack is horrendous this year, super unstable and thin so maybe next year will be better for EP.

I skied that place in the late 70's when it was Elk Meadows/Mt. Holly. Caught it on a ski trip through Utah and Colorado. It was laid back cool. Had a very enjoyable experience. Thanks for the report.

Here's a link about the history of the area....
