Best place to stay late April

Postby anonymous_ » Mon Mar 21, 2011 4:33 pm

Hi Guys

Will be visiting Mammoth from Australia on Sunday 24th April for a 4 days. My son and I will ski but wife not up to it.

Wondering where is best place (area) to stay. Was thinking ski in ski out but seems at this time some of the areas shut down.

Should we look at the village instead?

Will the gondola be operating then or will it all be shuttle?

There seems to be a trail back to the village, will we be able to use it at that time of year?

Any help appreciated.

The 24th you will have the entire mountain open. It is closing day for eagle and canyon lodge and the village gondola. On the 25th we will be skiing out of main lodge with just that side of the mountain open. The conditions right now could not be any better and when you come in april the base will be very solid.

Check for specials at the Mammoth Mountain Inn which is closest to the main Lodge, a few miles from town but is ski in and out at that time.

Thanks guys have been seeing mixed reviews about the INN.

Is it a hassle to stay in town and get the shuttle?

Is there a trail back to town?

Or, stay in town on the red line route and shuttle in to Main lodge. It is not ski in/ski out, but there are a lot more choices.

Otherwise it is Mammoth Mt Inn as your only choice for the whole trip, and it is not really ski in/ski out, more like hike across the parking lot.

The transportation in town is great. Anywhere you stay in Mammoth, you will be able to catch some form of shuttle or bus. The only thing to worry about is how much you want to spend on lodging. As with anything, you get what you pay for.

Anonymous_: Here's my suggestion for you based on your wife's interested. Remember, "Happy Wife, Happy Life".

If you wife is:

1. Athletic and/or hiker: Snowcreek (any), Wildflower, or Mammoth Creek condominiums. Wide open spaces, and access to the Snowcreek Athletic Club (for a fee).
2. Shopper: The Village. Not tons of shops there, but definitely more of an "urban" setting in a multi-story complex.
3. Can't leave her family too long: If she wants to hang out at the lodge while you're skiing - anywhere in town. The shuttle will get her to Main and back to pretty much anywhere.

That's my $0.02. Good luck and have fun. Remember, HWHL.

Thanks Ozzy

Has a knee issue - why not skiing but will probably want to hang out at the snow some shopping and as you suggest needs some pampering. So I am now looking at The Westin Monache Resort sounds like the best in town for facilities 4 star can get a 1 bedroom suite for around $1000 for the 4 days, big saving on peak time.
