You might need to see a Dr. More than likely, if you have been taking Glucosomine on a regular basis, and it is not working you might have more serious problems.
DMSO, all glibness aside SL, has a garlic taste not fish and is actually very therapeutic in humans. Alot of athletes, baseballplayers, professional runners and skiers included, use DMSO for pain after events, and arthritis and inflamation.

^^ and a lot of athletes used steriods too. DMSO is really strong stuff. I won't even use it on my horses any more. Maybe the Dr. could recommend a safe dose but I wouldn't take it after seeing what it did to my horse. A topical application (as recommended) got rid of the lump on his leg but that horse told me in no uncertain words that the application burned him - and all the hair turned white where I applied it.

I think there is a new version that leaves a double hickory smoked bacon taste. ;) But you do still have the urge to run when you hear a bell and occasionally have someone take a switch to your flanks.

I disagree that alot of athletes use steroids. I believe alot of athletes do not use steroids. It is just the headlines certainly about professional athletes using steroids has painted athletes with a broad brush. It isunfair.

DMSO is not for everyone, it is for Horses, and I am not a Dr. But if someone is in pain, that signals that something is wrong. If something is wrong, then a person should do something about it, whether it is DMSO or glucosamine or whatever. (BTW, Gluciosamine usually works well with low dose aspirin rather than alone) Now a days there are so many options and especially in Mammoth Lakes where we have excellent orthopedics. It is regretable to hear someone complain and not take advantage of the excellent services or options that are available now. When people have aches and pains, sometimes something as easy as loosing a few pounds helps take the strain off the joints as well.

Side-effects

Taking DMSO internally is reported to cause a fish- or oyster-like taste or odor in the mouth, likely due to the sulfoxide metabolites of DMSO

The same article describes DMSO's main use as a powerful solvent, and references studies relating it to near-instant brain damage . . .

I take it you are not in the science of research becuase studies have proven that in Dogs not humans. I know no one who drinks this stuff. That is insane. Nevertheless, I see where you (collectively) are going with this, and I am not biting. I am simply offering an opinion.

I appreciate the advice, but it's nothing I haven't heard before from MY ORTHOPOD. Of course I have gone to our great S.P.O.R.T. clinic here (heck, I live right across the street!), had the MRI's, taken the meds, use the supplements, had the cortisone shots, done the PT and continue those PT exercises at home. My left knee has arthritis, cartilage deterioration with a tiny Baker's cyst in the back of the knee and my right knee is essentially bone-on-bone. My doctor has told me that there would no guarantee that surgery would alleviate any of my symptoms and he won't even consider knee replacements until I'm 60. :(

I keep active by walking or riding my bike almost daily in the spring, summer and fall and ski as long as I can until it's too painful in the winter and spring. I can still fit into my ski pants every year, so weight isn't a problem.

So, I shall sign off to all you armchair doctors with a *whinny* and a *snicker*. :D

That is the problem SL. You are supposed to rub it on your joints, not drink it. No wonder it leaves a funny taste. :)

- You missed my point GWAP - steroid use was rampant in athletes - until they figured out the bad side effects (and better testing methods) Hey, maybe this woman's mother used DMSO:

Weird True FreaKy News

Woman's fishy-smelling mystery solved
By Tamara McLean

October 19, 2008 12:00am

A WOMAN who spent four decades puzzled by a pungent body odour "resembling rotting fish" has finally had the smell explained by Australian doctors.
The woman has been diagnosed with an incurable genetic condition called trimethylaminuria, or fish malodour syndrome, which affects the smell of sweat, breath and urine.

"The characteristic body odour resembling rotting fish can be intermittent, variable and influenced by diet, hormones and medications," her doctors said in the Medical Journal of Australia.

Professor John Burnett, of the school of medicine and pharmacology at the University of Western Australia, said the unpleasant body odour was first noticed when the woman was just seven, but the path to diagnosis had been "extremely difficult".

"After experiencing ridicule, distress, shame, anxiety and low self esteem during her school years, she first consulted a doctor about the problem at the age of 17, then again two years later, followed by a further four doctors over the next 20 years," Prof Burnett said.

I think we were speaking in generalities not necessarily about your situation :inlove:

What are the odds of a doctor being mentioned in an "over fifty" thread ? :o
