Ok, I'm stealin' my thread back.
As some of you may know I haven't had the best of luck scoring powder days this year. And me being a surf type person I like my powder days. Well as an old timer once said "you shoulda been here yesterday." I've missed some great days by a day or two. I can't really help it, my work schedule and the cabin being rented certain days doesn't allow me to bolt at the spur of the moment.
We had the second week of March booked for a while and it looked like there might be a good chance of some pow when we arrived when the charts where 240 hrs out. Well that dried up and the only chance of some fresh was going to hit a few days earlier.
I got sick with the crud a week before our scheduled departure date. Really sick. I took the next Monday off. Worked Tuesday and Wednesday. The snow was falling, I was trying my best to feel better. My wife was in Prague so it was gonna be me and Petey driving up. I figured I'd work Wednesday, come home and sleep for a few hours and then drive up and be there when the lifts open.
I did wake up at midnight but still felt pretty crappy and decided to go back to sleep. Finally woke up around 5 a.m. feeling a lot better. The car was packed already so all I had to do was make some fresh coffee and get Petey's stuff ready.
Here's Petey still half asleep while I was getting gas before getting on the freeway.

Since it was already getting towards rush hour traffic in L.A. I decided to take the 605 to the 210. The foothills were looking nice and green. And we just happened to see a comet going by.

Then Petey started in with the "how much longer dad?"

I told him it won't be long and he calmed down for a while and listened to the Allman Brothers with me.
Pretty soon we were coming up on Mammoth.

I said "hey Petey there's Mammoth up ahead." He was stoked.

Then we were passing 203.

I said "hey Petey it won't be long now."

We then got to my favorite turn off and stretch of road in the world. 158

I decided to head up to the hill instead of going to the cabin first. Wasn't really planning on riding that day anymore, it was almost 1:30, just wanted to check out the snow and the hill.
When I pulled in the parking lot the first thing I noticed was tracks off to the left of the hill. People were going OB and it looked great. If you look closely between the V in the trees in the middle of the pic you can see a guy making a turn on a snowboard.

It looked great but I didn't want to leave Petey in the car after the 7 hour drive so I could make a few turns. Plus I was into relaxing a bit. I let Petey out of the car and he went exploring a bit.

Petey hasn't been really good with other dogs since he got bit by that big ol' ugly dog a while back. Well, while he was exploring a bit he saw this dog and ran right up to it. The dog was another Border Collie and it was beautiful. It was by a car that a guy with telemark skis was hanging out at. I told the guy that my dog's name is Petey and he said "that's my name too." Our dogs started playing and me and Pete the guy start talking all about June.
Turns out the other Border Collie was a female named Shea and she was celebrating her 6th birthday. Petey started flirting right away.

It didn't take long before Shea noticed Petey. It was love at first smell.

While Petey and Shea played Pete and I talked about June and the side country. Every once in a while a group of people would walk by and Pete would ask them where they had been. They would rattle off the runs they did and then go get back on J1 to do it again. I learned a lot in the parking lot that day.
Meanwhile Petey and Shea were having a blast.

Petey was showing off going down the really steep stuff.

I think that they make a beautiful couple. Even if she is 4 1/2 years older than Petey. Can you imagine the puppies?

I told Petey that we had to go to the cabin before it got to late and he didn't want to go. I had to chase him down and promise him that he could see Shea real soon.

Next... We arrive at the cabin.
